Dangers Of Keratin And Other Smoothing Hair Treatments

Formaldehyde is toxic- Most effective hair treatments contain this carcinogen. In other words, in order to get the straight hair results you want, formaldehyde is necessary. Formaldehyde, however, has been linked to nasal cancer and leukemia. Whether straight hair is worth the risks that formaldehyde carries, is the ultimate question.

Biformyl is toxic- Many at-home versions of hair straightening treatments contain Biformyl, which "has significant toxicological concerns, including skin, eye, and respiratory tract irritation," according to Oprah.com.

Hair treatments are unregulated- These products are not regulated properly. In fact, no health agency regulates ingredients in cosmetics, period. According to Oprah.com, some of the highest levels of formaldehyde (almost 12 percent) were found in a Brazilian Blowout formula that was labeled "formaldehyde-free."

Think carefully about whether it's worth risking your health for smooth hair. Since these products are close to your scalp and easily absorbed into your bloodstream, think twice about your beauty decisions!
